Nov 07, 2007 (newstodate): While still not announced by airBaltic, news of a new route opening has been broken by a Latvian minister.
Starting from 2018, airBaltic will thus launch services between Latvia and Kazakhstan with flights between Riga and Astana operated with Bombardier CS300 aircraft.
At least that is what Uldis Reimanis, the Deputy State Secretary of the Latvian Transport Ministry, said at the recent international conference Trans Eurasia.
Almaty, the former capital of Kazakhstan until Astana was constructed in the north, was earlier on airBaltic's route network.
With the first flight on April 17, 2008, airBaltic started serving the route with two weekly rotations from Riga using Boeing 737 aircraft, but pulled out again from the start of the winter schedule 2009/10 as the crisis hit the global economy.
