Nov 21, 2017 (newstodate): With the growth of the aircraft fleet of the Swedish/British cargo carrier West Atlantic's UK arm, needs have arisen for more hangar space.
As a result, the carrier has relocated from its original space at Coventry Airport to East Midlands Airport that is also home to one of its largest customer, Royal Mail.
West Atlantic has now leased a dedicated hangar at East Midlands Airport that will serve as the maintenance base for the current fleet of nine Boeing 737-400 freighters and three British Aerospace ATP aircraft operating under the contract for Royal Mail.
With the new facilities at East Midlands Airport, West Atlantic will also be prepared for expanding the fleet with the coming new Boeing 737-800BCF converted freighters.
The four aircraft so far ordered are scheduled to be delivered in February, August, November 2018, and February 2019, carrying up to 23.9 tonnes of cargo with 12 main deck positions over 2,000 nautical miles.
Besides providing new and better facilities for current and not least future operations, the move in the UK is also an element in West Atlantic's restructuring efforts to fight against the drought in equity and liquidity.
Another element in these efforts is the decision to close the Groups hangar in Malmo, Sweden, by the end of the year.
