Dec 05, 2017 (newstodate): After yet another booming year, Iceland's Isavia is forecasting a sustained growth in air traffic volumes in 2018 as well.
Isavia thus expects 10.4 million passengers through the Icelandic airports in 2018, an increase by 18 percent, y-o-y.
The total breaks down into 6.4 million passengers to and from Iceland and another four million transfer passengers en-route between Europe and North America.
In 2017 Isavia expects to land at a total of 8.8 million passengers, an increase by 29 percent, y-o-y.
This breaks down into 5.8 million passengers to and from Iceland and three million transfer passengers.
In summer 2018, Isavia now expects 29 airlines to operate on routes to Iceland, but experience has shown that estimates will soon be overtaken by reality as traffic programs unfold.
Known new-comers to Keflavik Airport in summer 2018 include United Airlines with the launch of services from New Jersey's Newark Liberty International Airport from May 23 till October 3, 2018, and the Russian carrier S7 Airlines with a weekly rotation from Moscow Domodedovo Airport starting from June 9, 2018.
At least it is safe to say that Iceland's air connectivity is steadily increasing; in 2016 the island was connected with 80 destinations, of which 32 year-round. In 2017 this increased to 93 destinations, of which 46 are served year-round.
Unfortunately, Isavia does not produce an air cargo forecast.
But in 2016, 48,130 tonnes of cargo and 1,490 tonnes of mail were handled at Keflavik Airport, in total an increase by 10.9 percent, y-o-y.
