Dec 11, 2017 (newstodate): The Norwegian export of fresh salmon to China has indeed been reopened, but a boom is still sometime in the future.
-It is correct that a solution is in sight for lifting of the Chinese import limitations, but there are still considerable restrictions on export of Norwegian salmon, says Sigmund Bjorgo, Norwegian Seafood Council Director China.
-Right now, the challenge is to source sufficient volumes of salmon that are certified for export to China. A suspension thus remains on salmon from three important regions in Norway, Sar Trondelag, Nordland and Troms, and we cannot export salmon to China that are under suspicion of, or proved to be infected with Pancreas Disease or Infectious salmon anemia. This of course puts limits on the quantities of salmon available for export to China.
-So far into 2017, Norway has exported 2,815 tonnes of salmon to China, as the market access only improved from November.
-As for prospects for 2018, it all hinges on when the suspension on salmon from the said three regions is lifted. We will however not reach the 70,000 tonnes mark in 2018 as time will under all circumstances be required before the three regions are set free to ship salmon to China, says Mr Bjorgo.
