Dec 14, 2017 (newstodate): Norway's leading exporter of king crabs, Cape Fish is happy with the seafood air logistics now in place, bringing shipments from Lakselv in the north of Norway to Korea via Oslo Airport.
-Compared to the earlier solution building on trucking into Oslo, the freighter service cuts transportation time by 15 hours which is crucial in securing extra shelf life at the customer's end of the line, says Bjorn Ronald Olsen, Cape Fish CEO.
-As of now, the freighter capacity thrown in by DHL is sufficient for our purposes, but if we succeed in the future to lure salmon and cod exporters into this service, we would face a new situation.
-Crabs are relatively high-value commodities and we are fully capable of bearing a correspondingly higher transportation cost. By contrast, salmon is a lower-value commodity and exporters of fresh salmon traditionally expect a low rate for air transportation.
-If the approach to the market situation is reconsidered by the exporters of fresh salmon to Asia, seafood air logistics may become an increasingly attractive solution and we might see more freighter traffic out of Lakselv Airport, says Mr Olsen.
Besides seafood exports from Lakselv Airport, Norwegian shippers of seafood also send significant volumes of fresh salmon from Alta Airport where Norwegian and SAS operate flights to Oslo Airport for onward carriage to USA and for instance Italy.
