Feb 21, 2017 (newstodate): Domestic instability and a significant decline in foreign investments creates visible turbulence for Turkey's national carrier Turkish Airlines.
In January 2017, the carrier transported 12 percent less passengers than in January 2016, totaling 4.1 mio passengers.
The decline was especially strong on the airline's international flights where passenger volumes were down by 17 percent, y-o-y, and traffic on domestic routes was also down by 5.1 percent.
Despite the drawback, Turkish Airlines is still expanding its route network, adding 12 new destinations in January 2017, to a total of 296, but even so the carrier is also seeing its transit and transfer passenger volumes down by 16.2 percent in January 2017.
Cargo does, however, provide some positive relief for Turkish Airlines in January 2017 where volumes reached 63,325 tonnes, an increase by 7.6 percent, y-o-y.
