Apr 25, 2017 (newstodate): Starting from April 27, 2017, Iraq is opening its airspace for international transit flights again after a lengthy suspension.
Following on US bombings of tactical and strategic targets in Iraq in 2014, the US Air Force effectively closed the Iraqi airspace for all civilian and commercial flights by foreign airlines.
Due to the military movements and fear of misguided missiles, commercial airlines were thus forced to rerouting all traffic, taking instead the routes over Iran that was consequently forced to expand and upgrade its ATM capabilities.
The changes in flight patterns have had an impact not least on the traffic between Europe and the Gulf states, with penalties on flying times and fuel consumption.
