May 24, 2017 (newstodate): Plans for the development of the airport infrastructure in Greenland are taking shape under the management of Kalaallit Airport A/S - but financing remains a pertinent issue.
Plans now confirmed are that the runway at the capital airport at Nuuk will be extended to 1,800m, from today's 950m, Ilulissat Airport will also have its runway extended to 1,800m from today's 845m, and a new airport will be constructed at Qaqortoq with a 1,200m runway.
One main goal for Kalaallit Airport A/S is to secure the means for realizing the costly projects, and interest has been monitored from various Danish and international investors.
Now the Danish state may also lend a helping hand; a debate in the Danish Parliament has shown that a majority of parties are willing to pledge their support to finding ways of supporting the Greenland airports projects through the Danish Growth Fund, Denmarks Export Credit Agency, or the Nordic Investment Bank.
The Danish state could also support through the formation of a joint Danish/Greenlandic investment Fund, the Danish Prime Minister said.
