Jun 15, 2017 (newstodte): ICAO has now lifted the veil on its efforts to promote a working solution to the current crisis stemming from the closure of regional airspace to Qatar Airways.
-ICAO is presently reviewing requests from the government of Qatar to assess the flight restrictions imposed upon it by neighbouring States, and diplomatic discussions are continuing in ICAO this week to find a consensus-based solution, says Anthony Philbin, ICAO Chief Communications, Office of the Secretary General, in a mail in reponse to inquiries by newstodate.
-Ministers and senior officials from Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, the UAE and Bahrain are arriving at ICAO tomorrow, June 16, to progress the talks further with the assistance of our Council President and ICAO's Secretary General.
-Subsequent to the original Gulf airspace closures, the ICAO Regional Office in Cairo rapidly established contingency routes to insure the safety and regularity of international flights in and out of Qatar. The new routes were agreed to by a local Contingency Coordination Team of States, ICAO experts and concerned international organizations.
-This response has since been expanded upon to include a flight level allocation scheme and reduced separation minima to further guarantee safe international flight operations, says Mr Philbin.
