Jun 01, 2017 (newstodate): Backed by a firm state commitment worth 250 mio Swedish Kroner now given the green lights from EU, Sweden will see a new international airport opening by 2019.
Named Scandinavian Mountains Airport, the new facility will build on an existing small civilian airport in northern Sweden's mountainous region adjoining a similar region in Norway, and plans include the construction of a 2,500 m runway equipped with CAT II at both ends and rated Category 4E.
With this infrastructure, the airport will be facilitating operations by charter aircraft up to the size of Airbus A320 and Boeing 737.
-Preparations are well advanced, some construction work has already been started and most tenders are closed, and after the state commitment the group of other investors is now ready to provide the additional financing of the plans, says Brett Weihart, Scandinavian Mountains Airport CEO since 2015.
-Market analysis have proved the viability of the project for a new airport serving the region's extensive tourism industry, and estimates are that we can expect about 30,000 passengers during the first full year of operations, going up to some 100,000 within five years, an increase by 20,000 annually, says Mr Weihart.
The originals plans called for opening of the airport already by winter 2017/18, but the prolonged process of securing the state funds has pushed back the expected commissioning.
