Aug 16, 2017 (newstodate): Ukraine's Lviv Danylo Halytskyi International Airport has long been seeking low-cost operators to set up operations - but so far in vain.
Now, the airport has contracted the Italian carrier Ernest Airlines to establish a base at Lviv and start flights on a network to provide the region with new air connections allowing citizens to take advantage of the visa-free travels into the EU.
Ernest Airlines will initially allocate one Airbus A320 Family aircraft to Lviv Airport for flights to Milan already from September 22, 2017, adding flights to Venice and Naples from December, and plans are next to introduce more destinations including Sardinia, Verona and Parma from summer 2017.
In March 2017, Ryanair announced that it would launch seven routes to Lviv starting from October 2017.
The plans were however shelved in July after Ryanair failed to reach an agreement with Ukraine over airport charges at Kiev and Lviv.
