Sep 04, 2017 (newstodate): The Iranian carrier Mahan Air has had great ambitions for flights to Scandinavia - but hopes are fading..
-Mahan Air would indeed like to offer flights from Tehran to a destination in the Nordic countries, a company source tells newstodate.
-Pending the outcome of talks with the Danish CAA, we started talks also with Norway's Civil Aviation Authority for operating flights to Oslo and at same time we have also been negotiating with Sweden's Transport Agency.
-But it seems that they are all looking to Denmark, awaiting the final outcome of talks with the CAA - and our chances seem to be low.
-In the meantime, we would consider opening flights to Helsinki in Finland or to Amsterdam in Holland, but in both cases new air services agreements would be needed, the source says.
Mahan Air launched flights on the route between Tehran and Copenhagen from June 9, 2016, but was forced to suspend services in March 2017 after an inspection detected that the airline carried armed air marshalls which is not permitted under Danish law.
Several rounds of talks betwen Mahan Air and the Danish Transport Authority have ended without result.
In Sweden, the Swedish CAA approved Mahan Air's application on March 23, 2016, for rights to launch traffic from June 2, 2016 between Tehran and Stockholm Arlanda, but the Swedish government shelved the issue.
