The airline has accumulated a huge debts pile threatening its financial ability to sustain safe operations, the airline's CEO and Chief Accountant have been taken into custody for allegations of fraud and embezzlement, while the companys co-owners have fled Russia.
At the same time, several of the carrier's aircraft have been arrested to secure the assets of their owners, the leasing companies.
Thousands of passengers are stranded while efforts supported by the Russian government are made to have other carriers bring them back after days of waiting at airports.
Only in June 2017, VIM-Avia was admitted into IATA membership after passing successfully the renewal of its IOSA audit.
Based at Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport, VIM-Avia is among the Top-10 airlines in Russia in terms of passenger volumes that reached over two mio in 2016.
