Sep 19, 2017 (newstodate): Poland's Warsaw Chopin Airport will hit the capacity ceiling in 2020, with no further space for expansion.
LOT has already warned that this will be a threat to the carrier's sustained development, and construction of a replacement to the existing airport will be needed.
Polish media now reveal that plans are on the table for building a new airport at Baranow, within one hour's drive from Warsaw City Center, but costs will be excessively high and the entire design, planning and construction phase will require between 10 and 15 years, making a political decision urgently needed.
Expectations are that a decision will indeed be made already before the end of this month.
In 2016, Warsaw Chopin Airport handled some 34 mio passengers, an increase by 12 percent, y-o-y.
