Sep 25, 2017 (newstodate): Russia's new green-field airport, Rostov-on-Don Platov Airport is to be commissioned by December 1, 2017, well ahead of the 2018 World Cup.
All construction works have now been completed and the infrastructure is in the final stage of certification ahead of the official opening of the new airport that has been built for the 2018 World Cup and aiming for a role in connecting flights between Asia, the CIS and Europe.
The new airport covers 50,600sq m with capacity to handling up to five million passengers annually, with a 3,600 m runway to facilitate the addition of long-haul destinations to the region's route network.
The new airport will become the hub of a new Russian regional carrier under formation, Azimut Airlines that will provide domestic flights in Russia's south region.
On August 20, 2017, the carrier obtained its AOC from Rosaviatsia, and starting out with four Superjet 100 aircraft in the fleet, Azimuth Airlines will have a staff of 280 people on the roster, and plans to grow to a total of 12 Superjet 100 aircraft, with orders to be placed in 2019.
