Sep 08, 2017 (newstodate): As earlier reported, Swedavia is about to make a thorough assesment of infrastructural requirements posed by the significant increase in air cargo through Sweden's Stockholm Arlanda Airport.
The investigation now underway is demonstrating Swedavia's renewed focus on air cargo as part of its strategic development plans.
-Among other challenges we do have a comparatively pleasant problem, which is the enormous rise in volumes of mail shipments from China driven by e-commerce, says Bas van Goch, Swedavia General Manager Cargo.
-The traffic, managed by PostNord, is now comprising the handling of up to 100,000 parcels per day, which puts huge stress on all parties involved.
-Also the current PostNord mail handling terminal is certainly not built for such volumes, and the whole situation is only manageable thanks to close cooperation between airlines, ground and cargo handling agents and PostNord.
-The volumes from China are flown into Stockholm Arlanda in the belly cargo compartments of passenger aircraft by airlines including Emirates and Qatar and not least by Turkish Cargo's two weekly freighters from Istanbul.
-The situation is rather demanding as construction of new facilities requiring large investments should rest on dependable estimates of future trends and developments, which are extremely difficult in the case of e-commerce given the dynamics in the e-trade environment, says Mr van Goch.
