May 14, 2018 (newstodate): The Danish freight forwarding company Blue Water Shipping has seen volumes to Australia increasing after starting to build its own ULDs.
-The cargo does not need repacking but can be sent directly from Denmark to Australia on a ULD unit. Not only does it simplify the cargo handling during transit it is also done much faster and the risk of damage is minimized, says Rene Lindhard Rasmussen, Blue Water Billund General Manager.
-Rather than sending individual loose shipments for consolidation with other forwarders' commodities to same destinations involving later repackings and handling operations at transfer airports, sending off our shipments by own ULDs allows for a seamless procedure with faster transfer and earlier delivery at the final destinations for pick-up by our own people.
-Physically, the ULD is built by Billund Airport's Cargo Department next door to our own offices which is also a benefit allowing for close cooperation.
-This is a new venture for BWS, and Australia has been selected as a favorable testing ground as we have a sound mix of high- and low-density export goods for this market, and manageable volumes for a controlled start.
-As experience builds up, we will certainly introduce airfreight export by own ULDs whenever feasible, says Mr Rasmussen.
Billund Airport confirms a trend among Danish forwarders to export by own ULDs rather than as loose shipments.
-We are seeing more and more forwarders going this way. The benefits are enhanced control along the road, and faster delivery on booked flights as well as competitive rates, says Jan Ditlevsen, Billund Airport Snr VP Cargo.
