Nov 14, 2019 (newstodate): Lithuania's Vilnius Airport will embark on an extensive reconstruction project in 2020.
Slated to start in Spring 2020 and to be completed early in 2022, the construction program will comprise the reconstruction of the northern apron, taxiways, a new VIP terminal with a conference centre, construction of the departure terminal, alteration of the traffic scheme in front of the airport and new commercial spaces.
Today, Vilnius Airport has one 2,515 m runway and five taxiways. Depending on the objectives set, the runway F is expected to be extended, which will reduce the environmental impact due to the shorter manoeuvring time of aircraft.
One important stage will be the northern apron project, which will be implemented after an assessment of the traditional aircraft fleet that has evolved over the last ten years and its needs.
The next stages will comprise resurfacing of the runway, and the establishing of a new northern apron connection to the runway.
A round of tenders for the construction projects will now be opened, and plans are to keep the airport up and running through the entire construction process.
