Apr 03, 2019 (newstodate): The decision of Star Alliance member-airline Adria Airways to select the Russian Superjet 100 for its future mid-range aircraft took the industry by some surprise.
The decision was announced on November 26, 2018, when Adria Airways inked an MoU with Sukhoi Civil Aircraft Company for the long term lease of 15 aircraft type SuperJet 100, with deliveries to start from 2019 already.
Now, the negotiations have been suspended as Adria Airways has not been able to finalize the contract with SCAC, citing lack of commitment to a stable long-term partnership as well as lacking common vision of further strategic development of the company on the Russian side.
The contact with Adria Airways was also to comprise the joint setting up of a Superjet maintenance center at Ljubljana Airport.
-We realize that the Superjet 100 after-sales support at the entry to the European market must be organized profoundly and professionally. Together with Adria Airways we will create a joint maintenance and repair organization for the SSJ100 at Ljubljana Airport, SCAC said in a release as the deal with Adria Airways was published.
-That service platform will secure the operational reliability of the Superjet 100 aircraft in Europe.
The basis for further penetration of the Superjet 100 aircraft in Europe has thus been weakened by Adria Airways' decision to pull out, on top of the earlier decision by Brussels Airlines to let go of six leased Superjet 100 as well as current problems with CityJet also does not contribute to a European future for the Russian aircraft.
