Jun 05, 2019 (newstodate): The Polish carrier LOT is considering capacity limitations at Warsaw Chopin Airport a major bottle-neck in its expansion plans.
The carrier would like to expand frequency on flights to Seoul and Beijing but the current capacity at Warsaw Airport would not accommodate this.
Pending a decision on the future of Warsaw Chopin Airport, LOT has found other ways to secure room for expansion including establishing Budapest, in Hungary as a new hub for its Transatlantic flights.
Budapest Airport will increase in importance for LOT as its second hub, opening up markets in East and Southeast Europe for transit passengers between Europe and Asia/North America.
Already now, half of the passengers transported by LOT are transferring at Warsaw and Budapest for onward travels.
Poland is now mulling plans for construction of a new green-field airport, Central Communication Port, to be located approximately 40 km Southwest of Warsaw, and planned to replace Warsaw Chopin Airport from 2027.
If the project is realized, the airport will have two runways and will be designed to handling of up to 40 million passengers per year, with capacity to grow to 100 million passengers.
