Mar 12, 2020 (newstodate): Taking effect from Friday, March 13, 2020, entry by foreigners from Europe's Schengen area will be denied access into the USA for a 30 days period.
Ostensibly as a measure to curb the spread of coronavirus, the ban comprises all EU and EOS nationals, while so far exempting foreigners from the UK.
The ban will take a hard toll on airlines that have seen compensation for the shortfall of traffic from the Asian region to focus instead on the North Atlantic traffic lanes, now also closing.
Strongly affected once the ban is implemented is Finnair that has been planning for an increase in traffic between Helsinki and New York and Los Angeles during the coming summer season as the Asian, notably the Chinese services, are suspended.
The carrier has also planned for additional flights to New York slated to start in April, and to Los Angeles starting in July 2020.
Hard hit will also be Icelandair, among others, as the carrier has scheduled some 1,900 flights during the coming month, with North Atlantic traffic accounting for some 27 percent of the flights.
