Apr 15, 2020 (newstodate): As the aura around the word "China" may have been contaminated by coronavirus, one airline is considering changing its name: China Airlines.
The Taiwanese carrier notes a confusion around its use of the word "China" which in its original sense refers to "The Republic of China" that was forced to seek refuge after WW2 to settle instead on the island of Taiwan, as the People's Republic of China was declared on Mainland China.
China Airlines is now considering various alternatives such as Yushan Airlines, Formosa Airlines or Taiwan Airlines, but the process will need consent among shareholders as well as in the public - not to mention the expected strong international reprisals from Mainland China that remains keen to fight against any sign of Taiwanese independence from the mainland.
