May 28, 2020 (newstodate): With six Boeing 737 MAX aircraft grounded since March 12, 2019, Icelandair has been struggling hard to compensate for the shortfall of capacity - at least till the Covid-19 hit.
According to the Icelandic paper Morgunbladid, Icelandair may however use a cat flap in the contract to cancel the purchase of the up to 16 aircraft of the type.
The contract contains a clause, the paper says, allowing Icelandair to cancel the purchases provided deliveries are delayed more than 12 months, based on the current agreement stating that three of aircraft would be delivered in 2018, six in 2019, five in 2020, and the remaining two in 2021.
The mouse flap could thus be activated for two aircraft slated for delivery by March and April 2019, respectively.
And this year's five deliveries should be completed by the end of March, thus still with 10 months to go before the cat flap would open.
Which is not to say, of course, that Icelandair will actually insist on this way out of at least some damage from the Boeing 737 MAX adventure..
