May 20, 2020 (newstodate): Swedavia's airports have seen volumes plummeting as most of the cargo is generated by passenger aircraft traffic almost entirely absent since the start of the pandemic.
In total, Swedavia's three main airports at Stockholm Gothenburg and Malmo have seen volumes down by 25.4 percent, y-o-y, to 64,270 tonnes during January-April 2020.
Nor surprisingly, the capital airport at Stockholm has fared the worst, with volumes down 27.2 percent to 42,096 tonnes.
Also mostly handling cargo in belly compartments is Gothenburg Airport where volumes dropped 26 percent to 15,389 tonnes, while Malmo Airport with its primary focus on integrator cargo was less affected, with volumes down "only" 10.1 percent to 6,786 tonnes.
-There is however a demand for cargo capacity in the Swedish market, and counting movements there has been an increase by nine percent during the first four months of this year, says Ylva Arvidsson, Swedavia Cargo Director.
-Besides the integrator traffic we have also seen a growth in ad hoc all-cargo operations with shipments of PPE, and since May 8, 23020, SAS Cargo has been operating several all-cargo flights from China to Sweden.
-On the freighter side, Korean Air Cargo and Turkish Airlines Cargo have been operating at Stockholm Airport, and after a few ad hoc freighter flights Qatar Airways Cargo has been operating one weekly all-cargo service at Gothenburg and two weekly calls at Stockholm - and needless to day, we hope this program will be extended, says Ms Arvidsson.
And her hopes may not be fully unfounded:
According to a recent press release from Qatar Airways Cargo, the company will indeed add more all-cargo services on a regular basis to and from Sweden, to help “support Scandinavia’s businesses to cater to the high export demand from other countries".
