Jul 30, 2020 (newstodate): Norway's exports of fresh salmon to China remain marked by the drop in volumes during the current pandemic.
In week 30, ending July 26, 2020, volumes destined for the Chinese market were only 144 tonnes against 453 tonnes in week 30/2019.
As a slight consolation, volumes in week 30 were at least above the preceding week when only 68 tonnes of Norwegian salmon hit the Chinese importers.
During the first 30 weeks of 2020, Norway has exported a total of 10,376 tonnes of salmon to China, a decline by 25 percent, y-o-y.
Besides the overall effect from the pandemic spread in China, the salmon exports to China were also severely hit by earlier Chinese allegations that the salmon was itself carrying the coronavirus. Allegations, that were later officially refuted while leaving a negative impact on the trade.
Loads to Hong Kong are suffering as well, down 62 percent, y-o-y, to 111 tonnes in week 30, and down 17 percent during the first 30 weeks of this year that has seen Hong Kong hit both by political turmoil and the pandemic.
