Aug 21, 2020 (newstodate): Undaunted by the sustained regime of economic sanctions, Iran is again seeking ways to return flights on routes to Europe.
Since July 4, 2020, Iran Air has become online on the route between Tehran and Manchester with one-weekly rotations using Airbus A330 aircraft - and starting from September 2, 2020, Iran Air will also introduce flights on the route connecting Tehran and Madrid, also with a once-weekly flight for a start.
So far, flights on the route to Madrid are scheduled till October 21, 2020, and to Manchester till September 26, 2020, leaving the question open if flights will be included in the coming winter 2020/21 schedule.
Until March 8, 2020, when all Iran Air's international flights were grounded due to the coronavirus pandemic, the carrier was offering twice-weekly flights from Tehran to Stockholm Airport, once-weekly to Gothenburg as well as flights to Cologne/Bonn, Frankfurt, Hamburg, London Heathrow, Milan, Paris, Amsterdam and Vienna.
According to the Association of Iranian Airlines, Iran Air is still in talks with German authorities to resume flights in early September. Germany is Iran Air's biggest market in Europe, with three destinations and six weekly flights.
Sweden and Germany were the first two European countries to temporarily suspend Iran Air’s traffic rights in March 2020, and Sweden's stance seems to have remained unchanged.
