Jan 21, 2021 (newstodate): The Latvian carrier airBaltic has revealed plans for construction of a new aircraft maintenance complex at Riga Airport.
A 34,500 m2 hangar will provide space to handle line and base maintenance for seven Airbus A220-300 aircraft simultaneously, and plans are to launch the construction of the new hangar at the beginning of 2022, with commissioning by the end of 2023.
Since 2019, airBaltic has performed all Airbus A220-300 aircraft maintenance itself, but growing the fleet from today's 25 to 50 aircraft in 2023 and eventually to 80 aircraft if all options are exercised will require larger aircraft hangar capacity.
Besides providing own maintenance capability, airBaltic will also be offering maintenance for external customers, seeing the airline fleets of Airbus A220-300 growing significantly in the coming years.
In 2019, airBaltic became certified to provide full-scale EASA Part-145 Line Maintenance and Base Maintenance for Airbus A220-300 aircraft, becoming the first airline with base maintenance capability and the second maintenance organization in the world entitled to provide a full scope of base maintenance on A220 aircraft. To date, airBaltic has completed C-checks on the first seven of its Airbus A220-300 aircraft, planning for four more C-checks soon.
