Oct 05, 2021 (newstodate): With a 2,400m runway, Akureyri Airport has a role to play in Iceland - not only as a domestic airport but also to serve as an alternative for Keflavik Airport under adverse weather conditions and abnormal situations.
A new and expanded passenger terminal is needed to handling of larger passenger flows, and a tender for adding 1,100 m2 to the existing terminal to reach 2,700 m2 has been opened - for the second time.
As the first tender attracted only one bid well above budgets, the second tender to be closed on November 1, 2021, is hoped to bring in more affordable bids.
If eventually carried through, the planned new terminal will be commissioned to serve passengers from summer 2023.
