Feb 04, 2021 (newstodate): Reflecting a small market under heavy pressure from the Covid-19 and the stop to air traffic, the Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport saw a deep dip in cargo 2020.
Only 673 tonnes of cargo were handled at the airport, a decline by 45.2 percent, y-o-y.
January 2020 still saw an increase by 18.6 percent, y-o-y, to 97 tonnes, but all remaining 11 months were in negative growth including December where only 61 tonnes were handled - a decline by 49.3 percent, y-o-y.
On the positive side, the airport handled a total of 255 tonnes of mail which was still 2.7 percent over the preceding year.
The full-year mail volumes were effectively boosted by the traffic in December 2020 when the airport handled 35 tonnes of mail, up a healthy 25.4 percent, y-o-y.
Plying the skies on the route between the Faroe Islands and Denmark is today only Atlantic Airways with one daily rotation to Copenhagen and two to three weekly rotations to Billund.
SAS performed its last flight on the route between Vagar Airport and Copenhagen Airport on September 29, 2020, returning only by the start of the next summer schedule 2021, leaving Atlantic Airways alone on the trunk route between the two markets.
