May 05, 2021 (newstodate): By the end of May 2021, Lithuania's Siauliai Airport will be able to handling of large wide-body aircraft after completion of its current infrastructure projects.
The projects include taxiway reconstruction and construction of a new platform.
Today, Taxiway B allows for operating aircraft the size of Boeing 737 and Airbus 320 Family aircraft, but the reconstruction increasing the width from 21 to 23 m raises capacity to handling of aircraft the size of Boeing 747 and Airbus 330.
Siauliai Airport has the Baltic region's longest runway at 3,500 m and a second 3,280m runway, and is used by both commercial and military operators including NATO air forces supporting the monitoring of NATO's Baltic airspace.
The airport is also to grow in the aircraft maintenance segment, with the aircraft maintenance company Aviatic MRO planning for a future with aircraft P2F conversions.
In September 2020, Aviatic landed an MoU with Israel's leading aerospace and MRO company, Israel Aerospace Industrie that will provide Aviatic with necessary licensing and know-how needed to carry out the conversion of B737NG passenger aircraft into cargo configuration.
Aviatic MRO is currently constructing a 23,000 sq m aircraft maintenance and repair center at Siauliai International Airport, scheduled to start operations in 2022.
