Sep 08, 2021 (newstodate): Iranian airlines are facing extreme difficulties facing the harsh US sanctions.
One example was provided by a scheduled Iran Air flight from Tehran to Hamburg on September 6, 2021, operated with one of Iran Air's two Airbus A330-200 allowed to operate into the EU.
Due to bad weather conditions at Hamburg, the aircraft was first parked in a holding position waiting for the weather to improve; as this did not happen, the standard decision was made to seek an alternative airport.
In the end, the aircraft felt obliged to fly another nearly 900 km bypassing Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Zurich before eventually ending up at Milan Airport in Italy, pending clearance to return to Hamburg the next day.
The overly long flight to an alternative landing was caused by US sanctions that punish any foreign company doing business with Iran Air and with a representation in the USA to face reprisals if selling fuel to the Iranian company.
It now remains unclear how Iran Air managed to get fuelled at Milan Airport..
