Oct 18, 2022 (newstodate): Unique in the aviation industry, two blocs have successfully completed negotiations on open skies to replace a multitude of bi-lateral agreements - taking immediate effect.
The new agreement between EU and ASEAN, comprising 27 and 10 members states respectively, thus replaces over 140 individual bi-laterals and opens up for withdrawing all restrictions on flights between the EU and ASEAN for airlines based in either region.
Under the agreement, airlines of ASEAN and the EU will have greater opportunities to operate passenger and cargo services between and beyond both regions.
Airlines will be allowed to operate up to 14 weekly passenger services as well as and any number of cargo services via and beyond to any third country.
The negotiations between ASEAN and EU were completed at a virtual meeting on June 2, 2021, and has now been formally signed on October 17, 2022, to take effect immediately.
