May 03, 2022 (newstodate): Hardly reason for celebrations, one Icelandic Boeing 757-200 passenger aircraft has now been parked at Cabo Verde's Sal Airport for close to one year - still facing an unsure future.
The aircraft is one of three Boeing 757-300 aircraft owned by Icelandair and Loftleidir, and has not been handed back to its Icelandic owner after the breakdown in June 2021 of the JV after the airline's nationalization.
Instead, the aircraft was seized by the Cabo Verde state due to alleged debts owed by the airport operator.
According to local media, maintenance was performed on the aircraft during the initial period, but since then the aircraft has been left uncovered in open air and would now require comprehensive maintenance works to regain its airworthiness.
The aircraft owner, Loftleidir Icelandic, has brought the case of privatization and arrest of its assets to court, opening proceedings that are still ongoing.
As for the other two Boeing 757-200 aircraft earlier dedicated to Cabo Verde Airlines, one was actually in Iceland for maintenance, and the other aircraft, arrested by the Cabo Verde government in June 2021 over alleged debts, reportedly headed back to Iceland in November 2021.
