Aug 23, 2022 (newstodate): Widespread public pressure on Wizz Air has had its effect: the airline's Abu Dhabi subsidiary has now revoked plans for starting flights to Moscow from October 2022.
-Wizz Air Abu Dhabi is a national UAE carrier that operates in line with the UAE’s national regulations and policies, the company said in its earlier release to defend its decision.
While stepping down on the Moscow-route opening, the airline is however not closing is Russian adventure entirely: Wizz Air Abu Dhabi still has Krasnodar on its route map, aiming at start of services from Abu Dhabi from March 28, 2023, with two weekly rotations.
Wizz Air established its subsidiary in Abu Dhabi as a 50/50 JV announced in June 2020, with stakeholders including Wizz Air and Abu Dhabi Developmental Holding Company, with its focus on traffic between Abu Dhabi and destinations in Russia, Africa, India and Eastern Europe, including the Balkan markets of Macedonia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Croatia and Montenegro.
