Sep 16, 2022 (newstodate): The Latvian carrier airBaltic's first attempt at establishing a base outside its Baltic home turf may still have to prove its worth.
Whichever "commercial reasons" that may have convinced airBaltic to chose exactly Tampere in northern Finland, they have at last proved insufficient to sustain two key routes from Tampere to Frankfurt and Oslo that have now been discontinued citing "commercial reasons", as explained by the carrier's press department.
The route from Tampere to Amsterdam seems to have performed better and has now been upped to daily flights instead of twice-weekly this winter.
Keeping one Airbus A220-300 aircraft at Tampere, airBaltic will be offering direct flights from Tampere to Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Malaga, Munich and Riga in the upcoming winter season starting from October 31, 2022.
Early May 2022, airBaltic launched its first base outside the Baltic region at Tampere, in Finland, basing one Airbus A220-300 aircraft to build up a network of connections to Oslo starting from May 2, 2022, with three weekly rotations; to Copenhagen from May 3, 2022, with three weekly rotations; to Frankfurt and Munich from May 2, 2022, with three weekly flights, and to leisure destinations Malaga and Rhodes from May 1 and 3, 2022, respectively, with two weekly flights.
Bolstering its new base, airBaltic also announced an expansion of its code-share agreement with SAS, facilitating its passengers at Tampere Airport to connect seamlessly to SAS' flights at Oslo and Copenhagen for onward flights on SAS's international route network.
