Apr 25, 2023 (newstodate): Estonia is now live with its first remote ATC tower system.
Following a test period with dual manned/remote-control at the Estonian Tartu Airport, the new system was granted certification by ETA, the Estonian Transport Administration, on April 19, 2023.
The provision of air traffic services to regional airfields from the remote tower center in Tallinn forms part of the digitalization of the Estonian aviation industry.
In the future, remote tower technology will enable air traffic services to be provided to multiple airfields from one centralized location.
The new system now fully operational was developed in co-operation with the Australian company Adacel Technologies Limited, a provider of air traffic management, air traffic simulation and training solutions.
However, serving Estonia's second-largest city Tartu Airport is today without scheduled air services after Finnair closed down its flights from the end of the summer 2022 schedule.
This left Tartu Airport with only two missions; one is serving future pilots of the Estonian Aviation Academy with training opportunities, and the other is serving Tartu University Hospital with medical and emergency flights.
Opened in 1946, Tartu Airport has one 1,799 m runway.
