May 17, 2023 (newstodate): The Icelandic virtual carrier Niceair was looking into a strong summer 2023 traffic - and then it all crashed on March 25, 2023.
Niceair's flights were operated by the Portuguese ACMI and charter carrier HiFly allocating one Airbus A319 aircraft to serve on Niceair's route network - but the aircraft was arrested at Copenhagen Airport, taken over by its lessor due to lack of lease payments by HiFly, leaving Niceair stuck on a hard rock.
Since the launch of flights between Akureyri and Copenhagen on June 2, 2022, passenger volumes had grown, and the carrier was to add a third daily frequency on the route from the start of June '23.
The additional daily flight would allow for same-day return travels to benefit both leisure and business traffic, as well as offering further potentials for onward travels via Copenhagen Airport; transit traffic already accounted for about 1/3 of the total passenger volume.
For now, it seems that it is indeed all over: according to Icelandic media, all staff were made redundant late in April 2023, and the carrier will at least remain out of business this summer.
Niceair's Board and shareholders are now evaluating prospects for any possible revival of the venture as well as a future company and management structure, leaving all options up in the air.
