Jun 14, 2023 (newstodate): Maybe intended as a gesture to reward the Chechen Republic's leader, Ramzan Kadyrov, for his staunch support to Russia's war on Ukraine, the ownership of Chechnya's capital airport will return from the Russian state to the republic.
Putin has thus decreed that all state-held shares in Grozny Airport's current operator, Vainakhavia will be transferred from the state to the Chechen Republic, facilitating a major airport infrastructure reconstruction program.
Plans are to invest in the new five-story airport terminal currently under construction, and an airfield complex comprising a new 3,200 m runway, 23 m wide taxiways and an apron with parking spaces for 24 aircraft.
Also, a new separate road will connect the international terminal with the existing building.
Grozny Airport today as one 2,500 m runway and was certified for international flight operations in 2009.
