Aug 16, 2023 (newstodate): Denmark's Billund Airport is poised to add further freighter traffic later this year.
New operator at the airport will be the Faroese carrier FarCargo contracting West Atlantic Sweden to launch flights from October 30, 2023, from Billund to the Faroe Islands and Iceland continuing to New York Newark Airport and returning to Billund Airport.
Flights are scheduled for five weekly rotations with FarCargo's Boeing 757-200 converted freighter owned by the Icelandic salmon exporter Bakkafrost but placed on Swedish registry and to be operated by West Atlantic Sweden.
The core of the operation is to lift Bakkafrost's huge salmon export shipments to the US market while supporting the operation with sale of cargo capacity to other customers, including providing a new venue for Faroese imports from Denmark that are today primarily transported by sea.
In 2023, Billund Airport has seen the opening of Maersk Air Cargo's base at Billund Airport with Billund-Hangzhou-Billund operations since March 20, 2023, and since January 3, 2022, the Icelandic cargo carrier Bluebird Nordic is online with flights coming in from Keflavik to Billund, continuing to Bonn/Cologne Airport and returning along the same route in a cooperation with UPS.
