Sep 15, 2023 (newstodate): Independent of the management by the state-owned company Lithuanian Airports, the country's "fourth international airport" at Siauliai is determined to build a position in the country's air cargo market.
The Board of Siauliai International Airport has approved the airport’s strategy for 2023–2025, outlining steps to achieve the long-term strategic goal of becoming a growing cargo airport in the region.
All plots within the airport apron area are already taken, and an auction for the last remaining plot of 2.3 hectares allocated to cargo and logistics activities will be opened in October 2023. Hopes are to attract investors to set up new cargo-related business at the airport.
-We are happy with the strong air traffic by NATO forces, and we have just seen the grand opening of the Aviatic MRO hangar facility, says Aurelija Kuezada, Siauliai Airport Director.
-But we need to broaden our activities in order to generate more traffic and revenues. Siauliai Airport does not have any passenger traffic, so air cargo remains the sole venue for new business and growth.
-As there is thus no belly cargo to develop airfreight, we focus on ways to attract freighter traffic to the airport. Ideally, this would point in the direction of integrator traffic, and we know that space for DHL at Vilnius Airport is inadequate to secure room for further expansion.
-Our ideal scenario is now to see the coming tender attracting attention among investors interested in acquiring the available plot for construction of an airfreight handling terminal to serve the needs of integrator traffic.
-We provide a full package of ground handling; all airport infrastructure is in place, and the airport operates a 3,500 m CAT 1 runway - the longest in the Baltic region - and a second 3,280 m runway. Due to our location, no restrictions on air traffic apply, says Ms Kuezada.
In 2022, the freight forwarding company Rava Cargo opened a neutral customs warehouse at the airport, becoming the first commercial cargo operator at Siauliai Airport.
