Nov 29, 2024 (newstodate): Yesterday November 28, 2024, marked the official opening for international air traffic at Greenland's new capital airport at Nuuk.
Air Greenland is now operating flights connecting Greenland and Denmark directly between Copenhagen and Nuuk instead of earlier using Kangerlussuaq in southern Greenland as its stepping stone, requiring onward connections by smaller aircraft to Nuuk and other domestic destinations.
Like the next two international airports now under construction in Greenland, Nuuk Airport is however dedicated to passenger traffic, with little emphasis on serving the air cargo market.
Sources in Greenland's seafood industry point to the problems arising from the lack of pertinent equipment at Nuuk Airport to scan larger shipments of cargo.
Also, Greenland Airport's charges for scanning cargo are reportedly four times higher than charges at most other airports, constituting a competitive disadvantage for Greenland's export of prawns and other seafood, sources claim.
Adding to this, exporters also feel the burden from what they consider excessively high cargo rates by Air Greenland, which has opened up for hopes among seafood exporters to see Keflavik Airport as a potential alternative, or a supplement, to Nuuk Airport for future exports to the North American market of Greenland's seafood products.
