Apr 10, 2024 (newstodate): airBaltic is making plans for a resumption of traffic to Ukraine once conditions allow.
-As soon as Ukraine's airspace is open, we will immediately start our flights. In the first phase, we will operate flights to Ukraine from the three Baltic countries, which, in turn, are connected to many European destinations, says Martin Gauss in an interview with Interfax Ukraine.
-In the second phase, within three to six-months after the resumption of flights, we plan to base several aircraft in Kyiv. This fleet will operate flights to European capital airports and central markets.
airBaltic intends to start air services connecting the Baltic region with Kiev and Lviv, with Odessa and other potential destinations to be added further down the line.
According to Mr Gauss, airBaltic will eventually base up to five aircraft in Ukraine to support the country's air connectivity.
airBaltic performed its first flight between Riga and Kiev in 2004, and in addition to Kiev, airBaltic opened flights on August 2, 2005, to Odessa, to Dnepropetrovsk from October 31, 2005, and to Simferopol from April 11, 2006.
As Russia initiated its full-scale war on Ukraine, airBaltic was the last airline to leave Kiev Boryspil Airport in February 2022, before the airspace was closed.
