Apr 19, 2024 (newstodate): After a significant increase by 10.9 percent y-o-y in total cargo volumes handled in 2023, Iceland's Keflavik Airport has lost steam in Q1, 2024.
In January-March 2024, a total of 14,651 tonnes of cargo was handled at Keflavik Airport, down 4.8 percent, y-o-y.
10,525 tonnes were carried on full-freighter operations, which was down by 4.2 percent compared to last year, while belly cargo was down even more by 6.3 percent to 4,126 tonnes.
In Q1/24, the airport's export volumes dipped by eight percent, y-o-y, while imports totaling 5,115 tonnes grew slightly by 1.9 percent to 5,115 tonnes during the period.
Behind the slowdown in Q1/2024 are factors including the general global economic recession in 2024 as well as the disruptions caused by repeated volcanic eruptions in Iceland in the first part of this year.
