Apr 11, 2024 (newstodate): Pending the opening of new international airports in Greenland, shipments of fresh snow crabs are now already going by air to Denmark to test the new air logistic potentials.
The shipments are carried by Air Greenland from Kangerlussuaq to Copenhagen Airport for onward trucking to the auction hall at Hanstholm, Denmark, arriving ready for sale after only 20 hours from catch by Greenlandic fishermen.
Today, the chain of transportation includes several stages to bring the crabs from the landing site to the Kangerlussuaq Airport by domestic flights.
But with the opening of the new airport at Nuuk from end of November 2024 and the following opening of new transatlantic airports at Ilulissat in 2025 and at Qaqortoq by spring 2026, total transportation times will be reduced significantly.
The first large shipment of 500 kg live snow crabs from Nuuk to Copenhagen took place on March 14, 2024, and after a brief chilling at Copenhagen Airport the crabs were trucked into the seafood auction at Hanstholm.
Plans are now to see weekly shipments of at least 500 kg snow crabs via Kangerlussuaq to Denmark in a close cooperation involving Nutaaq Seafoods, Air Greenland, and Blue Water Shipping.
