Apr 24, 2024 (newstodate): In Q1, 2024, Sweden's Stockholm Airport was alone among the Scandinavian capital airports in seeing total flown cargo volumes down.
Flown volumes thus dropped by 4.6 percent, y-o-y, to 22,372 tonnes in Q1/24, after declining by 12.1 percent in Jan-Dec 2023 to 91,228 tonnes.
-A difficult situation, admits Jan-Olov Forss, Swedavia Head of Key Account Management, Passenger & Cargo.
-The loss in 2023 of SAS' route from Stockholm to Chicago dealt a blow to us, and attracting a carrier to step in to fill this void in capacity to the USA remains a key challenge.
-Stockholm Airport is seeing a sustained growth in low-cost operators that contribute nothing to cargo, while belly capacity on legacy carriers remains below earlier levels.
-More significantly is the outflow of air cargo from Stockholm Airport by road feeder services into continental airports including Copenhagen; this is currently poorly documented, but we are working hard to assess the air cargo volumes that do form a large part of our total air cargo potential.
-Obtaining accurate statistics on the total air cargo market would provide us with enhanced tools to convince airlines and cargo operators of the untapped business opportunities in the Swedish markets, says Mr Forss.
On the bright side, Stockholm Arlanda Airport is now preparing for the opening of new flights by ANA from Tokyo starting from June 6, 2024, with three weekly rotations, as well as Air Canada's flights between Stockholm and Montreal to launch from June 14, 2024, also with three weekly rotations, adding flights also to Toronto from June 2024, while Delta is already back with seasonal flights to New York JFK.
To which will be added loads on Lufthansa Cargo's Airbus A321F services operated with ever-changing frequencies.
