May 01, 2024 (newstodate): Estonian airspace is controlled and safe – flights are running as planned, Estonia's Transport Administrations says in a statement.
-Overflight traffic also takes place in controlled airspace and is supported by an additional DME-DME network, an alternative navigation system to GPS.
-Finnair and Estonian Air Navigation Services AS are nownow working together to find a solution to resume scheduled flights from Tartu Airport from 1 June, the statement reads.
Yesterday Finnair suspended flights on its route connecting Helsinki and Tartu Airport, in Estonia, from April 29 to May 31, 2024.
Last week, GPS jamming caused two Finnair flights to return to Helsinki due to GPS disturbances over Estonia.
In addition to GPS, Tartu Airport has a precision landing system ILS for landing in one direction, which is based on the information coming from the equipment on the ground at the airport, the heading beacon and the glideslope beacon.
However, at the moment there is a concern about how to support aircraft flying below three kilometers.
One ultimate, but costly, option might be implementing Remote Control Tower technology for airports in Estonia, facilitating centralized air traffic control from Tallinn Airport.
