May 31, 2024 (newstodate): The EU Courts has decided to uphold the sanctions on the Belarus carrier Belavia.
Belavia had applied to EU to be de-listed from the list of sanctioned Belarus companies imposed in December 2021 in response to the forced landing in Minsk on May 23, 2021, of a Ryanair aircraft on an inter-EU flight from Athens to Vilnius.
The court said the EU Council was justified in assessing that Belavia supported the Lukashenko regime by facilitating illegal immigration into the EU from third country nationals by operating flights from Lebanon, the UAE, and Turkey to Belarus.
Belavia thus remains barred from any flights in EU airspace, and has also been disconnected from IATA's global airline system BSP concerning ticket sales, and from CASS, IATAs global system for air cargo settlements.
