May 28, 2024 (newstodate): The Faroese cargo carrier FarCargo, operating for and owned by the country's largest seafood exporter Bakkafrost, has adjusted its business model.
In the original business plan were flights to carry Bakkafrost's salmon exports directly to the US market.
However, these operations with the first flight to New York on March 5, 2024, ended already with the last flight on April 9, 2024, on the route from Billund to Vagar and continuing to New York after re-fuelling at Kangerlussuaq Airport in Greenland, and returning from New York to Billund.
Instead, Bakkafrost has found it much more effective for FarCargo to cooperate with airline partners providing uplift to the US, Chinese and Asian markets from European hubs.
FarCargo is thus now cooperating with airlines including British Airlines, Aer Lingus and Air China, operating flights from Vagar Airport to airports including Dublin and Brussels with salmon shipments for transfer to destinations on its partners' networks.
FarCargo can thus take off from Vagar with full loads and avoid technical stops for refueling on the short inter-European flights.
As a result, Bakkafrost shipments of fresh salmon reach the global marketplace within 24 hours after harvesting in the Faroe Islands, greatly reducing waste while at the same time optimizing product shelf life at the end of the supply chain.
However, due to the ongoing weeks-long strike on the Faroe Islands, FarCargo's operations are currently suspended pending a final solution to the labor issue.
