May 06, 2024 (newstodate): The opening of new Transatlantic airports in Greenland will create new opportunities for the country's single largest export commodity: seafood.
Today, Greenland's seafood industry is dominated by two large companies sending frozen seafood shipments by sea to the export markets - but this may change as well with new seafood air logistics.
-With only frozen exports, prices have long remained low and fixed. Greenland has never before exported fresh seafood that may catch a considerably higher price in markets that yearn for high-quality fresh products, says Mark Kristensen, Unik Seafood co-owner and Mng Dir.
-My point of departure is: why land fish in Greenland, freeze and ship them to China by sea for filleting, and finally sail them back to Europe as frozen products?
-Our business plan is to go all in for fresh seafood landed daily by small Greenlandic fishermen using only environment-friendly fishing methods rather than trawling, and benefiting from the high quality of fish nurtured only by feedstock in their natural environment.
-This is our core asset, and our hope is to make a difference with our fresh seafood products. Healthy seafood caught by small fishermen, ensuring a high quality appreciated by customers and consumers.
-Sent by air, the fresh seafood will reach Denmark within 24 hours after being landed in Greenland, and within 48 hours in Europe. This will ensure a prolonged shelf life and catch a higher price in the marketplace. At the same time, the opening of new export potentials will also enable Greenland's fishermen to obtain fresh and higher revenues.
-Volumes do count, however, to secure contracts with importers. We are therefore now in talks with two other small seafood companies planning to cooperate in setting up a joint sales office capable of offering guaranteed deliveries of scale by air. Together, we will be fully capable of filling up the available belly capacity offered on all Air Greenland flights.
-The challenge now is first of all to spread the knowledge of fresh seafood from Greenland that is to be marketed as an environment-friendly product bred in Greenland's fresh waters without any industrial farming methods, says Mr Kristensen.
