May 14, 2024 (newstodate): While Riga Airport is now building a new cargo terminal designed for handling of up to 45,000 tonnes of cargo when fully extended, volumes in 2024 remain low and declining.
In the first four months of this year, Riga Airport has thus handled a total of 5,380 tonnes of cargo, down 13 percent, y-o-y.
Volumes have actually been falling month by month, last dropping 13 percent, y-o-y, in April 2024, to a mere 1,388 tonnes.
On the positive side, however, Lufthansa Cargo has now included Riga Airport as a new point on its European Short haul Freighter network, since May 4, 2024, routing an Airbus A321F flying in from Frankfurt to Riga and continuing to Helsinki before returning to Frankfurt for onward connections on Lufthansa Cargo's global network.
